カナダのトロント出身。現代R&Bシーンを牽引する世界的寵児。2010年後半に匿名で楽曲をオンライン公開し、2011年にはミックステープ『House of Balloons』『Thursday』『Echoes of Silence』で注目を集める。2012年にリパブリック・レコードと契約し、これらのミックステープをコンピレーション・アルバム『Trilogy』としてリリース。2015年のアルバム『Beauty Behind the Madness』で世界的ブレイクを果たし、「Can't Feel My Face」や「The Hills」などのヒット曲を連発。続く『Starboy』（2016年）、『After Hours』（2020年）、『Dawn FM』（2022年）も商業的成功を収める。ダークR&Bを基調としつつ、ポップ、シンセポップ、ニューウェーブなど多様なジャンルを横断。ファルセットを多用した特徴的なボーカルと、逃避、ロマンス、メランコリーといった内省的なテーマを深く掘り下げた楽曲が特徴。近年は2022年から2024年にかけて「After Hours Til Dawn Tour」を実施し、世界的なアリーナ・スタジアムツアーを成功させる。現代音楽シーンにおける最も革新的なアーティストの一人として君臨。
